 The New Living Translation (NLT) is one of many translations of the Bible frequently recommended for new readers as it uses modern and easily understandable language. If you're a beginner, or tried reading the Old English versions, this is a good place to start or re-start.

There are NLT Bibles available for those that are non-denominational, or Protestant, and there's the NLT-CE Bible for Catholics (CE, Catholic Edition).
